George Reiff, a producer and world-renowned bassist from Austin, Texas, died May 21 at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, ending a 10-month battle with lung cancer.
Reiff, 56, in recent years had toured with Court Yard Hounds, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Joe Walsh, Jakob Dylan, Jayhawk, and Chris Robinson, according to the Austin Chronicle.
He also performed with Ringo Starr and Levon Helm and, closer to home, with Joe “King” Carrasco, Ian McLagan, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Jon Dee Graham, Charlie Sexton, and Cotton Mather.
Reiff also operated a popular Austin recording studio, where he recorded not only friends like Hubbard, but Austin breakouts like Band of Heathens.
