With the barrage of new artists dominating Grammy Awards nominations announced Nov. 20, it’s interesting to note how many will make their award show debuts on Sunday’s American Music Awards show – often considered a barometer for popular music categories at the Grammys, which take place Jan. 26.
The AMAs, produced by dick clark productions, have long been the launch pad of awards season, along with the Country Music Association awards show, but highlight artists of many important American music genres. This year, it’s going to provide the first awards show look at many of the artists of the future.
For instance, Lizzo – who tops the Grammy Awards nominee list with eight nods and has three nominations for AMAs including for New Artist – will deliver her first-ever awards show performance. Her Cuz I Love You and “Truth Hurts” album and single have launched the flute-playing, empowerment-promoting Lizzo into the hearts of music lovers.
Billie Eilish, with six nominations for both Grammys and AMAs, will also perform for the first time on an awards show at the AMAs. She’s also up for AMA New Artist as well as album of the year for When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? The British newcomer made waves early in the year with “Bad Guy” and a shout out from Dave Grohl during his keynote interview at Pollstar Live! in February.

Post Malone, the AMA’s most-nominated artist with seven nods, will perform his new single with Ozzy Osbourne, Travis Scott and Watt.
Both Lizzo and Eilish have proven their mettle in concert, too. This year alone, Lizzo has reported an average of 4,505 tickets sold and grossed $201,268 per show while Eilish has racked up an impressive 7,733 tickets and $483,451 in 2019 to date.
Malone, a somewhat more seasoned road warrior, burst upon the scene in a big way two years ago and now commands arena stages with average ticket sales of 11,993 and gross of $1,036,113 in addition to curating his own Posty Fest, most recently staged at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, Nov. 2 and featuring Meek Mill, Pharrell Williams, Rae Sremmurd, Jaden Smith, and more.
The AMAs will also see the return of Selena Gomez, who is set to perform a world television premiere of her new music, in her first AMA appearance in two years.
While the newcomers promise to freshen up both the AMAs and the Grammy Awards shows, the AMA telecast will also feature a world television premiere with Christina Aguilera and A Great Big World, in a return since collaborating on 2013’s “Say Something.”
And of course, Taylor Swift is back – nominated for five AMAs and three Grammy Awards – will deliver a much talked-about performance as the 2019 American Music Awards Artist of the Decade.
Additional performers include Dua Lip, Green Day, Jonas Brothers, Kesha, Shania Twain, Thomas Rhett, Toni Braxton and more.
For those jonesing for awards season performances, the time is upon us. The AMAs, taking place Sunday, Nov. 24 at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, will be broadcast at 8 p.m. EST on ABC.
