Mickey Gilley Injured In Vehicle Crash, Expected To Recover For Country Music Cruise

Country singer Mickey Gilley is recovering from a fractured ankle and shoulder suffered Jan. 3 when an SUV he and his son were riding in wrecked in East Texas.

Father and son were returning to their home outside Houston from Branson, Mo., when their vehicle “rolled over numerous times” according to a statement from his publicist, Zach Farnum.

Another vehicle entered an intersection, and Gilley’s car swerved to avoid it, Farnum told Pollstar.

Both Gilleys are recovering from minor injuries, but Mickey will be forced to miss a Jan. 6 show at Texas Theatre in Greenville, Texas. He will resume performing Jan. 20 at the Orange Blossom Opry in Weirdsale, Fla., according to the statement.

“I had an accident yesterday. We rolled a car about three times over,” Gilley said in a Facebook post. “I hvae a fractured left ankle and a fractured right sholder. I am having a hard time walking because I have a big boot on my left leg. but other than that I’m doing pretty good. To be 81 years old and put myself through what I’ve been through it’s kinda tough sometimes on the old man but i don’t intend to retire. I will be out there on the road and I’ll see you real soon.”

Gilley is also booked to perform on the Country Music Cruise on Holland America Line’s MS Nieuw Amsterdam Feb. 3-10.

Gilley, a cousin to Jerry Lee Lewis and Jimmy Swaggart, has had a successful recording career since the 1970s, but shot to fame after the release of a remake of “Stand By Me” from the “Urban Cowboy” movie soundtrack.
