If Michael Dorf’s name suddenly popped up in that space betwixt your ears, then you’re on the right track. The City Winery founder has been the driving force behind many memorable tributes. Bill Withers, David Byrne, Paul Simon, Prince, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, The Rolling Stones and R.E.M. are among the acts whose music has been feted in Dorf’s special shows.
And now Dorf’s 14th annual tribute concert shines the spotlight on the Queen of Soul. The date is March 6 and the place is the world-famous Carnegie Hall in New York. While Franklin herself isn’t on the lineup, past honorees have made surprise appearances. Both Springsteen and R.E.M. showed up unannounced to play encores at their respective tribute shows.
Tickets for “The Music Of Aretha Franklin” are on sale with 100 percent of net proceeds going to music education organizations for underprivileged children, including Young Audiences New York, Little Kids Rock, Church Street School of Music, The Center For Arts Education, TON, Grammy in the Schools and D’Addario Foundation.
