Friends discovered his body at the festival’s campsite in North Byron Parklands at 7:40 a.m. Ambulance attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.
Police, who have not determined cause of death, are not treating his death as suspicious. It is not known if the man was found inside or outside his tent.
Falls organizers issued a statement confirming the death.
“The deceased has been identified and relatives have been notified,” it said. “A report is being prepared for the coroner and the festival cannot comment further as it is a police matter. Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this terribly sad time.”
The festival runs Dec. 30 to Jan. 3. It is one of the three Falls events staged simultaneously, in Lorne, Victoria and Marion Bay in Tasmania.
Now in its second year, the Byron event sold out 15,000 tickets in three weeks.
Promoters successfully applied to increase audience capacity by an extra 2,500.
Among those performing were Empire of the Sun, The Temper Trap, Vance Joy, the John Butler Trio, Cloud Control and DZ Deathrays.
