Set for Oct. 13-16 on Mulberry Mountain where the annual Wakarusa Festival takes place, the sixth annual Harvest Music Festival will also feature performances by Bela Fleck & The Flecktones, Railroad Earth, 7 Walkers featuring Papa Mali & Bill Kreutzmann, Emmitt Nershi Band, Corey Smith, Cornmeal, Split Lip Rayfield, The Travelin’ McCourys, and Peter Rowan.

But wait, there’s more, as in appearances by Trampled By Turtles, Todd Snider, James McMurtry, Sara Watkins, Great American Taxi, Steep Canyon Rangers, Matthew And The Atlas, That 1 Guy, David Lindley and Darol Anger’s Republic Of Strings. If that isn’t a big enough lineup to make you start plotting your route to Ozark, organizers are promising to add even more acts.

The musically inclined will want to bring fiddles, guitars, banjoes and other string instruments to Harvest Music as the festival debuts its “First Annual Fiddlin’ and Pickin’ Contest” featuring celebrity musicians serving as judges.

Intentionally limited to 7,500 people, the Harvest Music Festival is as much about enjoying and protecting nature as it is about music. Newly added to the event is the Conscious Alliance, a 601 non-profit based in Boulder, Colo., that works to distribute food to the poor. For the Harvest Music Festival the organization will conduct the “Art That Feeds” food drive benefiting the River Valley Regional Food Bank in Fort Smith, Ark.

Other nature-friendly events include a “River & Road Cleanup” planned for Oct. 12 in the vicinity of Mulberry Mountain that involves Rock The Earth along with river-rafters Turner Bend and the Shimon Presents Work Exchange Team.
