The accident happened near Navalmoral de la Mata, Spain, west of Madrid, as the band was en route to their scheduled concert in Lisbon, Portugal. Reports indicate that the tour bus collided with a parked truck shortly after 2:00 a.m. However, Spanish news agency Efe said the bus rear-ended the truck on the approach to a mountain tunnel.
Most of the injures sustained involved damage to the bus occupants’ feet. Singer Dryden Mitchell was treated for back injuries, while guitarist Terry Corso suffered a broken ankle. Bassist Tye Zamora also had foot injuries and drummer Mike Cosgrove had cuts and bruises.
Other than the band members, a tour manager, drum tech, bass tech, guitar tech, merchandise coordinator and security head were present in the bus during the accident. Their injuries ranged from broken ankles, broken feet, back injuries, and cuts and bruises.
The head of security for the band, David Zajic of the Czech Republic, suffered “undetermined but critical injuries.”
“We send out condolences and prayers to the family of the driver and our prayers are with David in hopes that he has a full recovery,” manager John Boyle said. “We’re obviously very fortunate and thankful the band and crew survived the accident.”
Alien Ant Farm had been in Europe supporting their debut album, ANThology, which featured their hit single, a cover of Michael Jackson’s “Smooth Criminal.”
The band’s appearance on the WHFS Festival in Washington D.C. on May 25 and the WRZX May Day fest in Indiana on the 27th have both been canceled, but at press time, it’s unclear if or how many other shows will have to be blown out due to the accident.
